THE INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS OF INDIA
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament, viz. The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act No.XXXVIII of 1949) for regulating the profession of Chartered Accountancy in India. The Institute, functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. The ICAI is the second largest professional body of Chartered Accountants in the world, with a strong tradition of service to the Indian economy in public interest
The affairs of the ICAI are managed by a council in accordance with the provisions of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 and the Chartered Accountants Regulations 1988. The council functions through its 4 standing committees and 35 Non-Standing Committees. To ensure operational efficiency, ICAI has established around 164 branches all across the India covered under Northern Region, Central Region, Southern Region, Western Region, Eastern Region and 34 Overseas Chapters. Amritsar branch is a medium sized branch covered under the Northern India Regional Council (NIRC).
The origin of Amritsar branch dates back to 1979. Operating from a single room located in the Income tax office, the branch started its activities under the charismatic leadership of Late. CA R.K Bansal ji who served as the first chairman of the branch. Amritsar Branch accomplished new heights under the dynamic leadership of Late. CA H.S. Goolry who served the branch thrice as a chairman. Amritsar Branch covers the area of Tarn Taran and Batala. The branch currently caters about 800 CA Members and 1200 CA Students.
